Introduction

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most powerful and widely used techniques in chemical research for investigating structures and dynamics of molecules. The size of the molecules analyzed can range from a small organic molecule, to a mid-sized peptide or a natural product, all the way up to proteins of several tens of kDa in molecular weight. NMR nuclear spectroscopy complements other structural and analytical techniques such as X-ray, crystallography and mass spectrometry. NMR’s advantage is the unique ability of a nuclear spectrometer to allow both the non-destructive and the quantitative study of molecules in solution and in solid state, as well as to enable the study of biological fluids. The development of NMR spectrometer has important contributions in Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and many other disciplines. This short course will provide participants (both educational and industrial clients) the analytical data regarding structure characterization of compounds for both solid and liquid samples. NMR can be utilized to improve the process especially in research and development such as by identifying the impurities, understanding the mechanism of formation or degradation of compounds, etc.  

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able:
  • Understand basic principle of NMR Spectroscopy
  • Comprehend the practical aspects of NMR Spectroscopy sample preparation
  • Interpret NMR data
  • Utilize a wide variety of NMR experiments to aid in their respective research areas
 

Trainer

Cecilia Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cecilia Devi Wilfredis an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS with more than 16 years of research experience and 4 years’ experience in industry. She obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry from University of York in 2004. She is a Member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Royal Society of Chemistry 2011 and a Member of Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM).

  2. Data Reporting and Processing (Writing NMR data      in condensed form)
  3. Problem solving
  4. NMR Interpretation
