IntroductionBiomass to Biofuels and Biochemicals is an intensive course which provide researchers, academicians, professionals and others with the information on the current status and future trends in biomass utilization and characterization, biofuel (gas, liquid and solid) conversion technologies, characteristics of the products, bioremediation technology, biomass fuel in engine performance and third generation of biofuel from microalgae.
ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the main characteristics of biomass and biofuel.
- Have an in-depth knowledge on biofuel conversion technology.
- Understand the environment sustainability of biomass, biofuel and biochemical production.
TrainersProf. Ir. Dr. Suzana Yusup (PEng, CEng MIChemE, CSci MEI), is the Head of HICoE Center for Biofuel & Biochemical Research, Institute of Self - Sustainable Building and a Professor at Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. Her research interest is in the area of biomass conversion to biofuel and biochemicals, material development and green processes. She has authored one book, 16 book chapters, more than 300 articles in high impact factor journals and conference papers, 19 patents and 5 granted patents with cumulative citation number of 3497 and H-index of 34 (Sources: Scopus). Among important awards won are Private Education Excellence Award (2018) Malaysia’s Research Star Award (2017), Malaysia’s Rising Star Award (2016), 2nd prize in the Elsevier Green and Sustainable Chemistry Challenge (2016), Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) (2016), Asia Research Award (2012) from The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ), and Creativity Award, Geneva (2011). Prof. Dr. Masaharu Komiyama graduated from Shizuoka University in 1974, received his M.S. from University of California, Berkeley, in 1977 and was conferred Ph. D. from Cornell University in 1980. Since then, he has held professorship at the Institute for Molecular Science, Japan, University of Yamanashi and currently at Chemical Engineering Department, UTP. His research is centered around heterogeneous catalysis, from its physicochemical fundamentals to industrial applications, with present emphasis on chemical energy conversion of renewable sources. He authored over 130 original and review papers, 9 book chapters and 5 patent applications. He has mentored ca. 20 postdoc fellows, most of them now working in universities all over the world. Prof. Dr. Yoshimitsu Uemura obtained his PhD in Chemical Enigneering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1990. Now, he is a Professor in Chemical Engineering and the Advisor of HICoE Centre for Biofuel and Biochemical Research (CBBR) of UTP. He was working for Kagoshima University for 23 years as a faculty member. During that period, he spent 2 years at the University of Toronto as a postdoctoral researcher. His expertise is catalytic reaction engineering, polymer engineering and biomass conversion. He has published 220 peer review journal papers. Prof. Ange Nzihou obtained his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering at the National Polytechnic Institute in Tolouse, France in 1994. His research interests focus on treatment processes and engineering new materials from waste and biomass. He has published about 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and supervised 10 PhD students and 12 postdoctoral. Since 2001, he has received 20 significant grants from industries and government agencies. He is an initiator and the Chairman of the Waste Eng Conference Series dedicated to organizing conferences and seminars on Waste and Biomass Valorisation. He has been and is currently visiting and guest professor at number of universities in United States (US) and in China. He is also an editorial board member of several international journals. Prof. Dr. Junji Inukai a Professor of the Clean Energy Research Center and the Fuel Cell Nanomaterials Center at the University of Yamanashi. After getting his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Tokyo in 1992, he has worked at Keio University, Tohoku University, and the University of Yamanashi, where he became a fulltime professor in 2009.In April 2019, he worked as a visiting professor of UTP. He carries out researches on clean-energy related materials and systems, such as fuel cells, from the nanoscale to the centimetre scale, based on experience in the physicochemical, surface electrochemical, and electroanalytical sciences, by developing new instrumental techniques, combined with numerical simulation. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anita Ramli obtained her PhD in Chemistry from Reading University, United Kingdom in 1996. She was working for Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia until 2003 before joining Advanced Materials Research Center, SIRIM Berhad until 2007. Since then, she has been with Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Her research areas are in development of heterogeneous catalyst for conversion of solid and liquid waste to fuel and chemicals as well as synthesis of functional nanomaterials for removal of carbon dioxide from post combustion process and removal of heavy metals from aqueous media. Dr. Lim Jun Wei was conferred with the Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Chemistry from Universiti Sains Malaysia in year 2009. He later received his Ph.D. qualification in Environmental Chemistry from the same university in year 2013. Currently, he is affiliated with the Department of Fundamental and Applied Sciences, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, serving as the Senior Lecturer and Cluster Leader of Applied Chemistry program. His major research interests are insect-based compounds, bioremediation of solid wastes and wastewaters and microbial biofuels. Accordingly, he has published more than 100 research papers inclusive of book chapters of late. He is also one of the Graduate Technologists under the Malaysia Board of Technologist. Besides, he has joined the Editorial Board Members of Chemical Science and Biomolecular Engineering under Boffin Access and Archives of Biochemical Engineering under Somato Publications. Dr. Muhammad Ayoub is a senior lecturer in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Currently, he is working in the field of Biofuel, Sustainable and Renewable Energy, Clean Environment, De-NOx, CO2 Capture and Utilization, Catalysis, Biomass conversion using innovative and collaborative research methods. He have more than 70 ISI publications and more than 120 Impact Factor with citation 770 (H-index 11 and i10-index 15) and number of international conference presentations and papers. He was invited 3 times as plenary speakers in international conferences. He have been supervised more than 46 undergraduate and postgraduate students and conducting 6 projects to perform research on Biofuel, CO2 Solubility & Utilization, Biomass Conversion and Green Catalytic Technology. He is a Project manager of Pak-MIII and chaired the UTP-PAKISTAN International Collaboration Workshop 2018. Dr. Aqsha is currently working as an assistant professor (lecturer) at Chemical Engineering Department Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. Prior joining UTP, he worked for Fuel Additive Company, PE Fuel Solutions Inc. in Canada as Research and Development Manager since 2014. He also has short experience in EPC Company (Rekayasa) and gas processing company (ConocoPhillips, Indonesia). He obtained his PhD from University of Calgary, Canada in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering where he worked on several industrial projects / research including waste to energy conversion, product development from municipal and industrial waste, development of fuel additive and CO2 capture project. He currently focus on the area of waste to energy conversion (biogas, biooil, biodiesel, biocrude oil), Bio-based product development (fuel additive, EM, biochar, biopolymer, etc) and working on reactor prototype design. Dr. Lam Man Kee is currently a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering (Renewable Energy) from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2014. His research interests are in microalgae cultivation, biomass & biodiesel production, heterogeneous catalyst development, life cycle energy assessment and social-economic impact of biofuel. Apparently, he has published more than 50 papers in ISI/SCOPUS-indexed journals with total citations of 2486 and H-index of 20 (SCOPUS database, July 2019). He is currently serving as the deputy editor of International Journal of Biomass & Renewables (UTP Press) and editorial board member of the Journal of Advanced Chemical Engineering (Omics International). Dr. Cheng Yoke Wang is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Malaysia Pahang in 2019. His research interests are in wastewater treatment, reaction engineering, photocatalysis, steam reforming, and thermodynamics. During his PhD study, his research project “hydrogen-rich syngas production from steam reforming of palm oil mill effluent (POME)” was funded by Malaysia Toray Science Foundation through Science & Technology Research Grant 2017. To date, he has successfully published 8 SCI-indexed journals. He is an active reviewer of International Journal of Hydrogen Energy. Azry Borhan is a senior lecturer in Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. He received his bachelor degree in Chemical Process Engineering specialized in Fuel Technology from the University of Sheffield, UK in 1998 and subsequently a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Swansea, Wales, UK in 2002. His area of specialization includes membrane separation technologies, activated carbon development from biomass for liquid and gas separation, energy utilization from biomass and wastewater management. He has authored numbers of publications including 3 patent applications. Course Content This two-day course will cover the following aspects (case studies may be included in some topics):
