Introduction

LiDAR technology isn't foreign in the Malaysia geospatial industry. The ability of LiDAR data to accurately characterize terrain has led multiple sectors in the country to utilize this technology for various applications, including for engineering, infrastructure, environment, disaster, and natural resource management. The evolution of airborne laser scanning systems and the development of automated 3D point cloud processing tools have produced a valuable source of information for various applications. During the last few years, a new generation of airborne laser scanners called full-waveform LiDAR has been developed, creating new opportunities for research and applications in the remote sensing community to extract more information from LiDAR data.   The principals of LiDAR and how it can be used effectively by professionals will be shared during this course. Apart from that, this talk will also discuss new developments in LiDAR survey technology and, new opportunities for this technology in Malaysia, based on Ground Data Solutions R&D experiences as the most experienced LiDAR service provider in the region. This course concludes with a hands on practical using a popular freeware for LiDAR data, and highlight the procedures for quality analysis based on the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) Accuracy Standards for Digital Geospatial Data (2014).    

Objectives

  • Introduce LiDAR technology and relevant applications in Malaysia
  • Understand preparing a LiDAR request for proposal
  • Learn how to do the LiDAR accuracy assessment based on ASPRS guideline
   

Trainers

Engr. Trudy R Ganendra graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1997 with a Masters in Engineering, and, in 1999, obtained a Masters of Science from Imperial College in Environmental Engineering.   In 2001, she was appointed as the Director of Ground Data Solutions R&D Sdn Bhd (GDS), a Malaysian-owned high-tech LiDAR survey and mapping service provider. GDS has been providing accurate and cost efficient maps and mapping products to a broad range of clients since 1991, and has been widely contracted by developers, planners and designers throughout South east Asia. GDS is the only local Malaysian service provider of Airborne Laser and Digital Imagery Surveys that owns its own LiDAR system, is involved in the research and development of new systems and is a direct operator with a proven track record of more than 25 years in airborne laser survey projects in Malaysia and South east Asia. She has successfully executed 130 LiDAR projects to date.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abd Nasir Matori obtained his PhD from University of Newcastle upon Tyne UK in 1996. Over almost 20 years in academia, Dr Nasir has specialized in geodesy and geospatial analysis for several engineering applications such as offshore platform subsidence and structural monitoring. Dr Nasir is currently a faculty member of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), as well as the member of the Geospatial Analysis and Modeling Research Group. Amongst his involvement in structural deformation monitoring using geospatial techniques are offshore platform deformation monitoring using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS/GPS), Offshore platform and onshore gas terminal complex deformation monitoring using PsInSAR technique and man-made slope monitoring using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Close Range Photogrammetry (CRP) technique. Due to his visibility in this area, he has been awarded a research grant amounting to almost RM 1 million from various research funding agencies. At least 30 of his latest findings in his research was published in indexed publications.    

Course Contents

This one-day course will cover the following aspects (case studies may be included in some topics):
  • Introduction to LiDAR and applications of LiDAR technology in Malaysia
  • Introduction to software using LiDAR data, quality of LiDAR data and introduction to preparing a LiDAR request for proposal
  • How to analyze the quality of the LiDAR data (hands-on)
