Introduction

Process hazards analysis (PHA) and risk management are essential to prevent process catastrophic incidents. A process hazard analysis is an organized and systematic effort to identify and analyze the significance of potential hazards. It also analyzes potential causes and consequences of fires, explosions, release of toxic or flammable chemicals, and major spills of hazardous chemicals. PHA generally focuses on equipment, instrumentation, utilities, human actions and external factors that might affect the process.   The course provide details on hazard analysis and risk assessment and its application to processing industries. The course covers topics on hazards, risk, risk analysis probability and reliability, hazard analysis and awareness, PHA tools (HAZID, HAZOP, etc), principle of risk management. The course will also include the risk assessment process, risk contributors, risk values, risks communication and reduction strategies to enhance process safety in processing industries.  

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able:

  • Apply appropriate techniques for hazard identification and risk analysis
 
  • Identify risk reduction strategies to prevent consequences
 

Trainers

Picture1 Mr. Muhammad Akram Mohd Safian, is a Staff Engineer, Process Safety with PETRONAS Group Technical Solutions with 18 years of experience in the oil & gas industry including plant operations. He graduated with a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Chemical Engineering from the Imperial College London. He has been conducting PHA studies such as HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA for design projects and operating facilities since 2002, as well as conducting QRA and other technical safety assessments for onshore and offshore facilities since 2009. As a formally trained HSEMS Tier 3 Auditor he frequently conducts audits on PETRONAS projects and operating facilities (on behalf of PETRONAS Group), in addition to audits of Malaysian Petroleum Arrangement Contractors (on behalf of Malaysia Petroleum Management). As a formally trained trainer (under PETRONAS Train-of-Trainers programme) he conducts training on various subjects related to process safety for PETRONAS Group (under PLC) and for PETRONAS Operating Units. Picture2 AP. Dr. Risza Rusli, is an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering Department, UTP and also the Programme Manager for MSc in Process Safety. She in an Associate Member in Process Safety of IChemE UK. Her expertises are in the area of inherent safety, consequence and risk analysis. She experienced in conducting QRA and providing professional course for few local companies in Malaysia. She is also a training instructor for process safety courses such as Consequence Modelling and QRA.  Her research area focuses on development of measurement tool for Inherently Safer Design and development of consequence analysis tool based on Computational Fluid Dynamic simulation. Picture3 Dr. Zulfan Adi Putra, is a senior lecturer at the Chemical Engineering Department of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. His areas of teaching and research are process synthesis and design, process modeling and simulation, process optimization, pinch analysis, and process integration. For almost a decade before being a lecturer, he was a process engineer and a consultant for various chemical companies in The Netherlands such as Trespa International, AkzoNobel, SABIC, Momentive, SC Johnson, DSM, and Hexion. He has been involved in different phases of chemical lifecycle such as research and development, feasibility studies, conceptual design, basic engineering, plant modeling and optimization, troubleshooting, as well as techno-economic analysis.
