Introduction

Accident in process industries have, in the past led to loss of life and damage to equipment, economic losses and environmental pollution. Because of the inherent potential for the catastrophic losses the process industries have rigorously pursued process safety. Process Safety is of critical importance to ensure the sustainability of industrial activities. It is to ensure safe processes and operation throughout the life of industrial plant. Most accident causation models indicate that major process safety accidents were a result of failure to recognize the hazards in the system and the need to establish layer of defenses to prevent the adverse accident effects. And that is why process safety is very important. Introduction to Process Safety course integrates risk assessment, safety management systems and safety culture showing how they can be assessed and improved. The course covers topics including the concept of process safety, anatomy of process safety incidents, major accidents, management system, process safety consequence, process safety strategies, layers of protection and taking advantage of past experiences.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Knowledge of what process safety is.
  • An overview on concepts of process safety hazards, process incident sequence and loss of containment
  • An overview of process safety strategies to prevent the occurrence or mitigate the consequences of the process safety incidents.
